Common Recycling Mistakes

Recycling is great and if done correctly it can really make a difference. If we are not carful and mistakenly contaminate our recycling, it may end up in landfill. Recycling mistakes are easily made, I know my family has made mistakes. But once given the right information the answers are quite simple.

Here are some of the common mistakes people make when it comes to recycling.

1: Food Contamination in recycling bins

Though you are trying to do the right thing by putting your pizza cardboard box in the recycling bin, if it is filled with melted cheese, food scraps and grease, this will combine with the paper fibre lowering the quality for recycling, meaning it will likely be sent to landfill.

Even if a container is recyclable, if it’s got food waste on it it’s likely to be rejected.

What you can do:

  • If it is a pizza box, recycle only the clean cardboard. Anything that has grease or residue cheese should be put into the general waste bin. Break away the clean part of the box and put in the recycling bin and the rest in the general waste bin or if you have a green waste bin break it up and put it in there
  • With take away containers empty and rinse out any food from the containers before putting them into the recycling bin.
  • Wash out bottles, plastic containers, and tin cans before putting into the recycling bin

2: Putting our recycling into plastic bags in the recycling bins.

Bagging up your recyclables, for example putting all your milk bottles and jars in one bag is not the correct way. It means they cannot be sorted properly and may mean they are not recycled and will end up in landfill.

Most councils don’t accept soft plastics like bread bags, the wrapping around toilet rolls and plastic bags.

What you can do:

  • Recycle your soft plastic bags if there is somewhere local that collects to recycle.
  • Put your recycling in the recycle bin loose.

3: Aluminium foil.

Many of us may not know that alfoil, provided it is clean, it can actually be recycled so it doesn’t need to be disposed of into the general waste. Aluminium can be recycled almost infinitely.

What you can do:

  • Scrunch the clean alfoil into a fist sized ball and place this in with your recycling.

4: Putting your recyclables into the general waste bins.

Though this mistake doe not interfere with the recycling process like some other mistakes, it is unnecessary to send something to landfill that could otherwise be put through a recycling process.

In some states of Australia the landfill capacities are a real issue, so we should be very mindful of this.

What you can do:

  • Make sure you are familiar with what can and cannot be recycled. Check the image as a guide or go to your local council for a full guide of what they accept and what they don’t accept.
  • If you are not completely sure if something is recyclable here is a great app to check out that is Australia wide RecycleSmart

5: Thinking biodegradable or compostable plastic items or other materials can be put in the recycling bin.

Approx 63% of Australians incorrectly think biodegradable and compostable plastic or other compostable/biodegradable items can be put in the recycling bin. A further 12% are unsure, meaning only 25% of us are getting it right. Biodegradable and compostable items are not suitable for recycling in council recycling systems as they contaminate the plastics recycling process.

What can you do:

  • Put any item that is either biodegradable or compostable in your councils organic bin, take it to your council tip where the organic matter is or put it in your own compost at home.

6: Coffee cup disposal.

The disposal and recyclability of coffee cups is a grey area, but is certainly a topic that has become increasingly talked about in the media since the War on Waste show.

Due to the physical make up of the take away coffee cup – these are NOT recyclable

What you can do:

7: Anything smaller than a credit card.

Did you know you can not recycle anything smaller than a credit card!

Anything smaller than a credit card will fall through the gaps in material recovery machinery, which is why councils are unable to accept them in yellow recycling bins.

What you can do:

  • Take bread tags to a collection point for Aussie Bread Tags for Wheelchairs
  • Number 2/4/5 bottle top lids can go to a collection point for Lids4Kids
  • Check your local Lids4Kids collection point to see what else they collect and also check your local Lions Club as they also collect items to recycle.
